The project is part of a major expansion of health care facilities in the Okanagan region of British Columbia, Canada and is on two sites, 45km apart, 400km east of Vancouver.
Kelowna General Hospital provides a 33,000 sqm Ambulatory Care Centre comprising a new emergency department, general clinics, surgical suite, short-stay beds, renal services and diagnostic services. It will be linked to the existing hospital, and includes two floors of shelled-in space for future expansion. Additionally, the project provides 4,000 sqm of academic accommodation for the University of British Columbia Medical School. The site will also benefit from a 10,000 sqm parking structure.
At Vernon Jubilee Hospital, the facilities are expanded with a new 17,000 sqm Diagnostic and Treatment Building to provide ambulatory care and day surgery, emergency services, surgical services, intensive care, cardiac care, maternity and paediatrics. Two additional floors of future expansion space are to be constructed.
The project is required to achieve Gold Certification under the Canadian Green Building Council’s LEED rating system for environmentally sound and energy efficient buildings and includes features such as green roofs, geothermal heating / cooling, electric vehicle recharging facilities and high thermal efficiency glazing.
